RMI Celebrates 6th Year Anniversary of Multi-threaded Processor Development and Leadership for its Multi-core XLR and XLS Product Families
RMI Extends Support for MIPS Technologies Multi-threading Initiatives and
Congratulates MIPS on recent multiprocessing announcement
Cupertino, CA, April 15, 2008 — RMI Corporation, a leading supplier of multi-core,
multi-threaded processors for communications and consumer applications, today
announced that it has celebrated its 6th year of multi-threaded development for its multicore
processor solutions, including the XLR Processor™ and the XLS Processor™
families. In addition, RMI extends its congratulations to MIPS Technologies on its recent
multi-threaded, multiprocessing product debut.
In February 2006, MIPS announced its foray into the multi-threading arena with a
revolutionary processor family for the embedded market, the MIPS32® 34K®, joining
industry leaders such as Intel Corporation, RMI, Sun Microsystems and others. Earlier
this month, MIPS Technologies introduced the MIPS32® 1004K™ coherent processing
system—the industry’s first embedded multi-threaded, multiprocessor licensable IP core.
The new multi-core offering provides among the best performance efficiency and
configurability in a multi-processing system — up to four single- or multi-threaded
processors integrated with advanced system coherency.
John Derrick, president and general manager, Processor Business Group, MIPS
Technologies, commented, “We are excited to be part of the growing community of
innovative multi-threaded processing solutions and are honored to be recognized by and
teaming with RMI, a leader in multi-threaded devices. By offering multi-threaded
technology, we are providing superior levels of performance over single-threaded
processors in a wide array of applications, including the home networking market where
memory latency and bandwidth are at a premium.”
RMI commenced development on its multi-core multi-threaded processors in November
2002. The company’s flagship product, the XLR™ Processor, was developed utilizing
innovative design algorithms and based on a MIPS64® instruction set. In August 2004,
RMI completed its design for the Thread Processor™ design, a 333 Million transistor
device originally built in TSMC’s 90-nm process. The company introduced the XLR
Processor in May 2005. The XLR Processor is currently in full production, meeting
customer demands and exceeding expectations for yield, frequency and power.
“RMI invested in multi-threading early on which, combined with other architectural
innovations, has delivered significant throughput performance to our customers across
networking, enterprise and infrastructure applications,” said Nazar Zaidi, vice president
of engineering, RMI Corporation. “We have continued to build on our success in multithreading
with the XLS Processor family and are excited to see MIPS join the multithreaded
processor design community.”
RMI’s multi-threaded solutions are multi-core processors providing a rich set of
features and performance to address the wide variety of integrated next generation
applications, including integrated security, Web services, virtualized storage, load
balancing, server offload and intelligent routing and switching systems. The XLR700 and
XLR500 series processors are software and hardware compatible and each processor is
available in a variety of power options including standard, low and ultra low power. The
XLS Processor™ family consists of cost-effective devices for embedded communication
and networking, SMB and client oriented solutions. These solutions include integrated
security, access points, routers and switch products. Each device within its series is
software and hardware compatible, and the XLS 600, 400, and 200 series processors
are software compatible.
